The Costs of Inefficient Robust Scheduling Practices in the U.S. Airline Industry
نویسندگان
چکیده
Airlines today use robust scheduling to plan ahead for unforeseeable disruptions. We empirically examine three common robust scheduling practices: flexibility to swap aircraft, flexibility to swap gates, and scheduled downtime. To do so, we characterize efficient operating practices in the airline industry by estimating a multiple-outcome, multiple-input production frontier. Estimates of how robust-scheduling inputs expand this frontier, and the tradeoffs faced by carriers along this frontier, allow us to infer how carriers view the costs of robust-scheduling inputs and the value they place on various operational outcomes. These estimates provide a rationale for the different robust scheduling practices used by carriers, point towards ways that carriers and regulators can target improvement, and demonstrate the severe consequences of even small inefficiencies. For example, we find that on average across its network JetBlue achieves only 89% of the efficient level of load factor for its observed levels of other outcomes and inputs, resulting in a 3% reduction in per-flight revenues.

Production planning and control (PPC) systems have to deal with rising complexity and dynamics. The complexity of planning tasks is due to some existing multiple variables and dynamic factors derived from uncertainties surrounding the PPC. Although literatures on exact scheduling algorithms, simulation approaches, and heuristic methods are extensive in production planning, they seem to be ineff...
متن کاملCockpit Crew Pairing Problem in Airline Scheduling: Shortest Path with Resources Constraints Approach
Increasing competition in the air transport market has intensified active airlines’ efforts to keep their market share by attaching due importance to cost management aimed at reduced final prices. Crew costs are second only to fuel costs on the cost list of airline companies. So, this paper attempts to investigate the cockpit crew pairing problem. The set partitioning problem has been used for ...

This article explores the development of previous models to determine hubs in a competitive environment. In this paper, by comparing parameters of the ticket price, travel time and the service quality of hub airports, airline hubs are divided into six categories. The degree of importance of travel time and travel cost are determined by a multivariate Lagrange interpolation method, which can pla...
